Matt Miller Makes It Two In A Row With Butchwildermuth/ALMS Win At Oakshade Raceway

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Matt Miller’s worst finish in an UMP Late Model Feature at Oakshade Raceway this year is one second place finish. The other three have all been wins. The latest of which came in Saturday night’s Butch Wildermuth Memorial/American Late Model Series (ALMS) Feature.

The third place point man in the ALMS standings, Ky Harper, suffered some bad luck on the very first lap of the feature after getting turned around on the backstretch and collecting a couple other cars to bring out a caution flag. The right side of Harper’s borrowed ride was peeled off and he ended up retiring to the pits.

Rick Delong got the early lead over Rich Neiser and Matt Miller. Those driver went three-wide for the lead on lap three and one lap later Neiser fell off the pace and rolled to a stop to bring out another caution which ended Neiser’s evening.

Matt Miller took the lead from Delong one lap after the restart and once again began to drive away from the rest of the field.

Another driver in the top five of ALMS points, Shawn Negangard, suffered a cut tire and went to the pits for service, but could not get the tire changed before racing resumed.

Hillard Miller won an exciting heat race earlier in the night and had a very strong top five run going in the feature, but pulled out of competition with mechanical issues late in the race.

Miller went on to impressively earn his second consecutive feature win with Rusty Schlenk and Tyler Boggs finishing second and third respectively. Rick Delong slipped back to finish fourth with ALMS point leader John Henry coming home fifth.

Joe Smith started on the pole of the UMP Sportsman Butch Wildermuth Memorial Feature looking for his third straight feature win, but Matt Lindsey had other plans and took the early lead after starting on the outside of the front row and never looked back.

A spin on lap four forced Joe Smith to restart at the tail of the field which pretty much ended his hopes of the three-peat.

Brett Miller began to pressure Lindsey for the lead after a lap eight caution for Gary Nopolis’ spin. Miller appeared to be a little bit
better just after the restarts with Lindsey looking stronger after a few green flag laps were run.

Lindsey held off the challenge, but one more caution late in the race would give Miller one last shot with just two laps to go. Lindsey held on to win his second UMP Sportsman Feature win of the year with Miller settling for second.

Mike Jessen, Joe Derbeck and Amy Bernard were the rest of the top five finishers.

Jerry Signor, Ron Tolles and Jim Scout battled for the lead at the start of the UMP Bomber Butch Wildermuth Memorial A Main with Scout taking over on lap four.

Scout proceeded to pull away from the rest of the field, but Signor reeled the leader back in late in the race. In the final set of corners Signor dove to the inside to challenge for the lead, but Scout held him off in an exciting finish picking up his second feature win of the year.

Danny Hogrefe and Craig Dippman started deeper in the field and ended up third and fourth with Ron Tolles slipping back to finish fifth.

Dylan Herman led the entire distance of the UMP Hornet Feature event to win his third of the year. Adam Noonan recovered after a slight tangle with Dylan Burt on the first lap to take second with Hornet point leader Drew Smith finishing third.

Tyler Line finished fourth and Dylan Burt slipped back to finish fifth.

Dan Dippman started on the pole of the UMP Bomber B Main and never looked back after the green flag dropped.

Chris Williams was running in the top five, but a spin on lap 5 sent him to the rear.

Fred Burtch put some pressure on Dippman for the lead at one point in the race, but slipped up high in the corner and fell back through the field. Dippman went on to the victory followed by Josh Overmyer, Jody Burton, Tim Mullendore and Jeff Gies.

Karl Spoores led the first two laps of the final event of the night, the UMP Bomber C Main, but then slowly dropped off the pace and began to fade. Dan Shaffer took the race lead and went on to the win over Kyle Light, Ron Leonard, Brian MacKenzie and Nathan Goodman.

Another full racing program highlights Leupp Outdoor Equipment Night on Saturday, June 27 at Oakshade Raceway with UMP Late Models, UMP Sportsmen, UMP Bombers and UMP Hornets all in action. Gates open at 4pm and races start at 7pm.

Cryderman, Smith, Fjorden-Nord & Wyttenbach Show the Way on Night #2 of the Badger State Nationals

Sunday, September 28th, 2008
With summerlike weather conditions, the second night of the first Badger
State Nationals took place on Friday September 26 at the Cedar Lake
Speedway. The FYE Motorsports promoted program featured some truly
outstanding main event racing action for the field of 123 cars on hand at
the 3/8 mile high-banked Wisconsin speedplant. When the last lap of racing
had been completed, race fans had witnessed some of the very best feature
racing seen at CLS in quite some time in the street stock and Midwest
modified mains. Earning hard-fought victories tonight in the street stock
division was popular female driver Chanda Fjorden-Nord while veteran racer
Bob Smith topped an incredible battle in the Midwest modified main. Joel
Cryderman turned in a solid performance passing Don Shaw on lap 8 of the
late model feature race enroute to victory while Joel Wyttenbach came out
ahead of a great two car battle for the win in the Legends feature.

For the second night of the Badger State Nationals, passing points were
again in use during heat race competition. The 28 car Legends field kicked
off the racing program with three heat races. Cam Schaefer came from 7th to
win the first heat race over Ivan Sailer. Mike Miller grabbed the lead from
his outside row two starting spot to lead all the way in the second heat
with 7th starter Eric Barth in the runnerup spot. Nathan Speten only led
one lap in the third heat, but it was the most important final lap of the
race as he passed Jeff Steenbergen for the win. All three heats ran
caution-free. Many of the Legends cars came from the Wisconsin Legends
Racing Dirt Series in Southern Wisconsin while several others made the trip
south from North Dakota where they run weekly at the Nodak Speedway in
Minot. A few Legend cars on hand were from the local area where they run
weekly on the pavement at Elko Speedway.

With some cars unable to return for the second night, the street stock
division had two heat races for the 17 cars on hand. Chris Peterson led all
the way to post the win in the first 10 lap heat race over 9th starter
Chanda Fjorden-Nord. Cory Rosen drove the final seven laps of the race with
a flat left front tire but held on to finish third. Jeff Heintz was strong
up front in the second heat, as he led the entire distance while Shawn
Kammerud and Jay Kesan swapped the runnerup spot a couple of times before
Kammerud regained it for good on lap 7.

A solid field of 43 Midwest modifieds were on hand. Although the top five
finishers from the Thursday night prelim feature were already locked into
the Saturday night championship main event, a couple of drivers attempted to
improve their starting positions by racing in the Friday night show. Shane
Sabraski, who turned in a fifth place finish in the prelim feature race the
night before, drove away from the field in the first heat to post the win.
Bob Smith came from 8th to finish second. A J Roschen led the first three
laps in the second heat, but it was 8th starter Jason Vandekamp on a mission
to the front. Vandekamp took the lead on lap 4 and went on to record the
win over Luke Hines. Roschen saw his night end with mechanical problems
while running second. Bryan Siercks grabbed the early lead in the third
heat race until 4th starter Brock Gronwold moved by on his way to victory.
Kevin Monteith also got by Siercks with one lap to go to finish second. The
fourth heat would see Karth Mitchell lead all the way for the win with
Ronnie Rihn in the runnerup spot. Matt Weisman led the opening lap of the
final heat race, but 2008 CLS track point champion Shawn Phillips took
command a lap later. Weisman stayed close to Phillips but had to settle for
second.

Four heats for the 35 late models would see Jim Carlson lead the first two
laps of the opening heat until Joel Cryderman blasted by for the win to
finish in front of Cory Mahder ten laps later. Pat Doar led all 12 laps in
the second heat over Don Shaw. Rick Hanestad and Eric Breeschoten traded
the lead four times in the first four laps of the fourth heat race until
Hanestad took over for good.

Two Midwest modified B Mains transferred the top three finishers to the
prelim feature race. Wayne Dean came from 4th to take the lead and eventual
win on lap 10 of the first 15 lap B Main. Eric Herbison and Rusty Kollman
took the remaining transfer spots with Kollman getting by Dane Durbin off
the final turn on the last lap for third. Jeremy Houle led all 15 laps in
the second B Main, as he built up a comfortable margin over second place
finisher Bryce Johnson and Sam Nelson. Scott Erickson finished third but
was docked two spots for jumping on the lap 2 restart, as the race went
nonstop the final 13 laps.

The top six finishers in the late model B Main would earn the final transfer
spots to their prelim feature. Keith Foss led the first three laps, but Tim
Isenberg drove past Foss for the lead on lap 4 and never looked back.
Following the leaders were Jim Bruggeman, Shawn Mahder, Patrick Hoffman and
Gregg Hill. A brief intermission followed this race with some blade work
done to the track in turns one and two prior to the first of four big
feature races for the night.

The Legends feature race was up first and all 28 cars rolled trackside with
Joel Wyttenbach and Ivan Sailer pacing the field for their 25 lap race. At
the drop of flagman Jeff Stacken's green, it was third starter Jeff
Steenbergen grabbing the lead at the end of lap one. Wyttenbach battled
back to lead laps 2 & 3 before the first caution flew for a spin in turn 4.
Steenbergen regained the top spot on the restart and led the next three laps
until the second caution waved when Tom Fraser broke. When the race went
green again, fifth starter Spencer Wilson took the top spot with 11th
starter Eric Barth moving into second. Contact on the frontstretch between
Wilson and Barth two laps later ended with a multi-car crash in turn one.
Barth rode the hook to the pits while Wilson and several other cars pitted
for repairs. On the restart, the red flag appeared when Robert Lever lost
the right rear wheel on his car and flipped hard several times in turn one.
Lever was taken to a local hospital for observation. When the green
replaced the red, an incredible battle for the lead developed once again
between Wyttenbach and Steenbergen. Over the course of the next 13 laps,
the two raced side-by-side with Steenbergen holding a slim lead at the line
during laps 10-18 only to see Wyttenbach edge by to lead laps 19-20.
Steenbergen barely led lap 21, but it was Wyttenbach regaining the top spot
a lap later. Wyttenbach opened up a couple car length lead during the final
three laps enroute to the victory. Steenbergen, 14th starter Tony
Brockhouse, 19th starter Troy Speten and Tom Wagner completed the top five.
Eighteen cars finished the 25 lap distance in a very entertaining race.

All 17 cars lined up for the Street Stock feature event. What race fans
would witness over the course of 20 nonstop racing laps likely will be
described as one of the best street stock feature races run in CLS history.
Chanda Fjorden-Nord grabbed the early lead with 2008 Legendary 100 champion
Chris Peterson a close second. Peterson gained the lead on lap 3, as Cory
Rosen and Jeff Heintz joined the battle up front. Peterson and Fjorden-Nord
raced hard with Chanda retaking the top spot on lap 8. Peterson battled
back into the lead on lap 11 and appeared as though he may be able to hold
off the other three drivers. Fjorden-Nord slipped back to third at one
time, but she charged back to put the pressure on Peterson for the lead and
regained the front running position on lap 16. Rosen briefly got by
Peterson for second on lap 17, but Peterson passed Rosen on lap 18 and
closed in on the leader. Fjorden-Nord held off a furious charge by Peterson
over the final two laps to emerge with a thrilling $500 victory in a race
that was nothing short of spectacular. Rosen finished a close third with
Heintz just a few feet behind in fourth. The top four finishers were never
more than a few car lengths apart for a good share of the race. Jay Kesan
completed the top five with Shawn Kammerud, Kris Peterson, Justin Vogel,
Kevin Schmidt and Rusty Kollman rounding out the top ten. It was a popular
win for the weekly female competitor, as fans cheered her on to victory.

With the crowd still buzzing from the street stock feature, a very strong 24
car Midwest modified preliminary main event lined up for 20 racing laps.
The top five outside row starting spots in their Saturday night championship
feature race were at stake, so it figured to be another great battle. The
Midwest mod drivers did not disappoint, as they raced caution-free for 20
laps in what turned out to be another outstanding feature race. Jason
Vandekamp and Bob Smith brought the field to the green with Smith leading
the opening lap. Brock Gronwold quickly moved from his third starting spot
to the lead on lap 2. Smith charged back around Gronwold to lead lap 3.
Gronwold edged back inside of Smith to retake the top spot a lap later.
While the leaders traded the front spot back and forth, Vandekamp and 7th
starter Shane Sabraski were right in the mix too. The second through fourth
spots changed hands numerous times throughout the remainder of the race. At
the halfway mark, it was still Gronwold with a narrow lead over Smith.
Smith moved back by on lap 11 as the top four cars ran in a group lap after
lap. With just a few laps to go, Sabraski emerged from the battle to take
second when Gronwold slipped up over the cushion a bit in turn two. Bob
Smith defeated Shane Sabraski, Jason Vandekamp and Brock Gronwold for an
exciting win. Jason Hoffman finished a close fifth. Luke Hines, Ronnie
Rihn, Matt Weisman, Jeremy Kerzman and Clayton Wagamon completed the top
ten. Only two cars failed to finish the race.

The fans had already witnessed three great feature races, but it was now
time for the rumble of the big late models to take center stage for their 25
lap preliminary feature race. Again, one of the top five all-important
finishing positions would earn a driver a starting spot in the big
championship feature race on Saturday night paying $12,000 to win. Don Shaw
blasted into the lead from his outside front row starting spot with Joel
Cryderman in tow. Shaw set a fast pace on the cushion until he drifted a
bit high in turn 3 on lap 9. Cryderman seized the opportunity and took the
lead. Shaw recovered to run a close second as the leaders slowly began
working their way towards lapped traffic. As the leaders worked traffic
just past the halfway mark, Cryderman made a tremendous move to split two
lapped cars and put a little distance between himself and second place.
Once Shaw and third place runner Pat Doar cleared the two lapped cars, they
closed in on Cryderman. Cryderman, making his first CLS appearance of the
season, knows his way around the 3/8 mile oval very well though. With the
laps clicking by, Cryderman continued to lead over Shaw, Doar, Jeff
Hinkemeyer and Duane Mahder. Doar tried several times to get underneath
Shaw exiting turn two but could not. On the final lap, Shaw jumped the
cushion in turn two and Doar drove by. At the checkers, it was Joel
Cryderman earning the win over Pat Doar, Don Shaw, Jeff Hinkemeyer and Jeff
Wildung. Duane Mahder had held the coveted fifth place spot until the final
corner on the last lap when he jumped over the cushion and lost two spots.
The race ran 25 laps nonstop to the finish with only one car dropping out.
