Rain Curtails Chub Frank’s Weekend Of Racing At McKean County Raceway

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

BEAR LAKE, PA –Rain ruined Chub Frank’s racing plans once again last weekend – but at least this time he was close to his Bear
Lake, Pa., home. One week after experiencing two rainouts during a weekend trip to the Midwest, Chub lost a shot at a big payday in his backyard when wet weather washed out the $12,000-to-win United Late Model Series Priority Care RaceFANS 50 at McKean County Raceway in East Smethport, Pa., on both Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 26-27).

Chub did run preliminary events on Thursday and Friday nights as part of the fourth annual McKean County Raceway Fall Classic Weekend, but he made the hour-and-a-half drive back to his shop on Saturday when rain overran western Pennsylvania and forced ULMS and MCR officials to postpone the event to Sunday. He never pulled out of his driveway on Sunday because more
precipitation prompted an early cancelation of the event, which was rescheduled for Sat., Oct. 3.

Unfortunately, Chub won’t be able to return to MCR for the 50-lapper barring a last-minute change of plans. He is scheduled to visit K-C Raceway in Alma, Ohio, on Oct. 2-3 to run the $20,000-to-win O’Reilly All-Star Late Model Series ‘Dirt Cup Classic 100.’ “It’s too bad Smethport (McKean County) had to get rained out,” said Chub, who finished second in last year’s Fall Classic finale at the one-third-mile oval. “I want to run the show because it’s good money close to home,

but we’re going to K-C for $20,000 to win. We won there last month (the World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Buckeye 100’) so I feel like we’ll have a good shot at pulling off another one.” Before the rain arrived on Saturday, Chub kicked off his assault on MCR’s Fall Classic by entering Thursday night’s ULMS ‘King of the Hill’ program in his Corry Rubber/Lake Shore Paving/Hino Toyota/All-Star Performance/Corry Laser/Slavic Corporation/Custom Race Engines/GW Performance Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1*. A five-round series of one-on-one match races involving 31 drivers, Chub beat Andy Kania, Doug Ricotta, Jeff Hoffman and his cousin Rick ‘Boom’ Briggs in succession before losing the final five-lap dash to Mike Knight. Chub had a quiet Friday night at MCR, finishing 18th in the 30-lap ULMS preliminary feature. He wasn’t a serious factor before retiring to the pits
near the halfway point of a $2,000-to-win event that was captured by Briggs, who shares Chub’s shop.

Columbia Motorsports Park Closes 2009 Race Season

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Lake City, FL (September 30, 2009)   Due to hunting season opening soon and some unfortunate turn of affairs, Columbia Motorsports Park has closed their 2009 racing season.  Champions for 2009 will be from the points ending on September 19, 2009.

“We hate cutting the racing season short,” said Operations and General Manager Don Nerone, “but things have come up beyond our control and with hunting season right around the corner and a lot of our racers are hunters, we have decided to end our year.  Champions for this year will be from the September 19 points.”

“I would like to thank all the racers, their families and friends, and our great fans for a wonderful 2009 year.  It is always sad to see the year come to a close and Sandy and I do thank you all for your support this year.”

“The October 3rd, October 17th and the October 31st Crash-A-Rama has been cancelled.  We wish you all the best of luck hunting and the holidays fast approaching.”

“This has been a tough year for everyone with the economy going up and down, gas prices going beyond the limit and back down, people losing their jobs, their homes.   Everyone says things will get better and let’s hope they do for all of us.  We only wish the best for everyone who has supported Columbia Motorsports Park these past two years.  We have had the best drivers, fans, and employees that you could ask for and we appreciate you all.”

“And as I have always said and will continue to say – SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL TRACK.”
