Fast Drivers & Good-Looking Cars to be Rewarded During Snowball Derby Week

Wednesday, November 28th, 2012

PENSACOLA, FL – Nothing in short track racing compares to the sights and speeds of Snowball Derby weekend at Pensacola, Florida’s Five Flags Speedway. To help celebrate and honor the drivers that speed around the Five Flags half-mile with sharp-looking racecars, WXBM 102.7FM in Pensacola, Hamner Racing Engines of Harpersville, Alabama and Capitol Renegade of Greenbelt, Maryland are providing several awards during Snowball Derby week.

Qualifying for the 45th Annual Snowball Derby on Friday, November 30 will feature a $1000 cash prize for the driver who sets fast time on Snowball Derby Pole Night from WXBM. In addition, Jeff Hamner of Hamner Racing Engines has added an additional $750, making a $1,750 payout for the Snowball Derby pole-sitter.

The top 30 drivers will lock themselves into the Snowball Derby field in qualifying. Qualifying spots 31 on back will have to rely on transferring from the 50-lap Snowball Derby “Last Chance Race” on Saturday, December 1. The driver that
qualifies 31st, therefore starting on the pole for the last-chance event, will receive a $250 bonus from Hamner Racing Engines.

“WXBM Pole Night is one of the most intense couple of hours in short track racing,” said Tim Bryant, General Manager of Five Flags Speedway. “More than 70 cars are pre-registered for the 300-lap feature and only 37 of them will make the show, so qualifying for the Snowball Derby keeps everyone on the edge of their seats. We’re proud to have WXBM and Hamner Racing Engines take part in such a special night for all the competitors vying for a coveted Snowball Derby starting spot.”

To honor the drivers and teams that spend countless hours making their Super and Pro Late Models look as sleek as can be for the Snowball Derby weekend, Capitol Renegade will present $500 to the driver that the fans of Speed51.com, the Official News Site of the Snowball Derby, vote as the “Best Appearing Car of the Snowball Derby.”

“Part of the fun of Snowball Derby weekend is seeing all the new paint schemes, wraps and designs that teams put on their cars just for this one race,” said Bob Dillner, Speed51.com owner and SPEED broadcaster. “We’ve been proud to present the
‘Best Appearing Car’ award for several years now and it’s great to have Capital Renegade come on board with Five Flags and 51 to present this cash award. Fans look forward to the ‘Best Apparing Car’ voting every year during our Snowball Derby coverage on Speed51.com and I know that the fans will have some cool-looking cars to vote from this year.”

In addition to the $500 cash prize for the “Best Appearing Car,” 51 Sports, the parent company of Speed51.com, will offer a one-page website design for the winning driver.

The 45th Annual Snowball Derby kicks off on Wednesday, November 28th with the Green Flag Party. As the teams unload and begin the tech process, fans from 5pm to 9pm CT can meet the drivers and see the cars that will compete during Snowball Derby weekend. The first on-track activity comes on Thursday, as practice for the Super and Pro Late Models commences. Later that evening, qualifying and feature action for the Five Flags Speedway Bomber and Sportsmen divisions will take place.

On Friday, November 30th, it’s WXBM Pole Night, as the top 30 in Snowball Derby qualifying will be locked into Sunday’s 300-lap feature. More practice for the Snowball Derby and Snowflake 100 cars will take place, as well as a full card of Super Stock and Modified action.

Then on Saturday, December 1st, it’s the Allen Turner Snowflake 100 time trials, last-chance qualifying race and the 100-lap feature, plus final practice for the Snowball Derby cars and a 50-lap last-chance qualifying race for the Snowball Derby.

Finally, the 45th Annual Snowball Derby will then go green on Sunday, December 2nd at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, FL.

Tickets and reserved camping spots are still available, but are going fast. To order tickets or to reserve a camping spot, call the Five Flags Speedway box office at (850) 944-8400.

Champions Crowned At Bubba Raceway Park

Tuesday, November 27th, 2012

Ocala, FL–The Scorpion Racing Products Modifieds, Buddy’s Home Furnishings Limited Late Models, Barfield Law Group Mini Stocks, and Rent-N-Roll Gladiators wrapped up their title fights while the 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks must wait another week to smell the trophy.

First up were the Rent-N-Roll Gladiators as they wrapped up the championship between Steve Johnson and Brandon Haseleu. A 10 lapper started with Reid Christensen out in front of the field as he looked for another win. Haseleu would struggle as he actually pulled off for the night early which allowed Steve Johnson to take home the title. On lap 6 David Pate smacked the outside wall out of turn 4 to bring the only caution of the race out. Steve Johnson would retire as his radiator began to steam and he knew the title was his. That left just Christensen and Stephen Frankland on track. They would finish in that order while Johnson, Pate, and Brandon Haseleu rounded out the top 5.

The 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks were up 2nd and Bubba Durbin would lead early. A lap 5 caution for DJ Horiski’s turn 4 spin gave Brandon Elwood the shot he needed to jump to the lead. Elwood would then lead through multiple cautions, including a completely synchronized spin from Brian Mullins and Jonathan Appleby, before giving way to “IceMan” Chad Scranton with just 4 to go. Scranton took home the $1000 prize, along with his weekend sweep, while Bubba Durbin finished 2nd. Elwood would finish a solid, yet disappointing, 3rd with Jonathan Appleby and Jeff Stalnaker, Jr. behind him.

Scorpion Racing Products Modifieds began with Dalton Lanich flying past his team-mate from 3rd to lead lap 1. Lanich, however, would have to hold off names like Pratt, Mathews, Bronson, Hammond, and both David and Buzzie Reutimann. On lap 11 Paul Snyder spun and Tyler Clem, who had held David Reutimann off for over 6 laps earlier, made contact as he had nowhere to go. Rich Pratt used the restart to take the lead and David Reutimann did the same as he took 2nd. A couple of cautions kept the pack bunched together. Rich Pratt, a GT Academy graduate, would take home win #1 of 2012 over NASCAR winner David Reutimann and Richard Petty Driving Experience driver Dalton Lanich. Bryan Bernhardt and Buzzie Reutimann rounded out the top 5.

Barfield Law Group Mini Stocks started with Keith “Hotshot” Briggs up front for an important reason. Reid Christensen brought the yellow out on lap 2 when he ran into the turn 4 wall. Buddy Pope spun in 2nd on lap 4 and didn’t lose a spot. With 2 to go Dean Kinsey brought a yellow out and gave Buddy Pope 1 last shot at Hotshot. Briggs would have to hold off Pope, Kody Fisher, Dean Kinsey, and Kris Prouty. Briggs would win in an emotional homecoming for his mom. Pope, Fisher, Prouty, and Kinsey were the top 5.

The final event of Bubba Is Thankful Weekend was our Buddy’s Home Furnishings Limited Late Models. JO Nobles would inherit pole and lead from the start but the youngsters Christian McGillivray and Tyler Clem were all over the division champion. On lap 5 Billy Holmes got loose and Shane Koperda had nowhere to go but into driver #7. Both were okay and Koperda continued on. McGillivray spun on the restart allowing Carter Stokes to jump to 2nd and Jason Pope to 3rd. Stokes would stall under caution and could not return to action leaving Jason Pope and Tyler Clem as the top 3. Ricky Land spun out of turn 4 on lap 13 and set up a great finish but Nobles would have his hands full with Pope and Clem. Nobles would not be denied his 12th win in 22 races while Jason Pope and Tyler Clem took career performances with 2nd and 3rd, respectively. David Showers and Christian McGillivray rounded out the top 5.

Next week is the NeSmith Crate Late Model Series finale and a $2500 to win 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stock battle! They both wrap their championships up and they are tighter than ever. You can contact us on Twitter (@BubbaRacewayPrk), Facebook, www.bubbaracewaypark.com, or call us at 352-622-9400!

Bubba Is Thankful Weekend Starts Off Strong

Monday, November 26th, 2012

Ocala, FL–The points season has wound down and tomorrow is our final night of action before we confirm all but one champion. The RaceCar Engineering Late Models, in conjunction with the penultimate round of the Sunoco/Buddy’s Home Furnishings United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series, and Twisted Tea Top Gun Sprint Cars ended their seasons while the Scorpion Racing Products Modifieds, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, and Rent-N-Roll Gladiators put points on the board before they wrap it all up.

Scorpion Racing Products Modifieds opened the show for us. Kyle Bronson led from outside pole as he chased history but had “4-Time” Jeff Mathews behind him. “The Killer” was struggling with lapped traffic while Mathews chased him down and this all on a 10-lap green run. The green run didn’t end until lap 15 when Rich Pratt’s #78 broke and slowed right in front of a group of 4 cars. Pratt never stopped but, in the name of safety, a caution was thrown. The caution allowed Mathews and Buzzie Reutimann to take another shot at Bronson. Dalton Lanich would bring out the second caution as he tried to avoid the broken-down car of Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. As the field approached the 2-to-go sign Jeff Mathews’ #33 broke leaving Bronson to take home his 13th win of 2012. Buzzie Reutimann finished 2nd while Garret Stewart bettered teammate Dalton Lanich for 3rd. Paul Snyder finished 5th in his debut.

The Twisted Tea Top Gun Sprint Cars knew that only 2 could win the title and that Matt Kurtz, barring a disaster, would clinch by starting (as you earn well over 60 points, base for the series). Tony Agin would use pole position to take the early lead while Matt Kurtz felt comfortable as he had 7 spots over Ruel. Lap 7 saw caution 1 as “THE Human Highlight Reel” Shane Kreidler spun out of turn 4; Agin, Kurtz, and AJ Maddox were the top 3. Agin would begin to struggle in the last 8 laps and Kurtz seized the moment. “The Jacksonville Jet” knew what the scenarios were and he did just enough as he took home the win and, with Mark Ruel, Jr. only 4th, the title! Agin finished a strong 2nd with Shawn Murray, Ruel, and AJ Maddox the top 5.

The middle race was our very own 2012 RaceCar Engineering Late Models with some UDLMCS drivers in the mix as well. With the UDLMCS championship closer than ever before we would see Mark Whitener go all out to catch Keith Nosbisch as Christian Augspurger prayed for a miracle mistake from the veterans. Augspurger did what he must- jump to the lead, as Keith Nosbisch and Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. fought for 2nd. Tyler Clem spun out on lap 7 to bring out the first caution- the top 3 was Augspurger, Lloyd, and Nosbisch with 43 left. On lap 16 Ivedent broke the right front as Nosbisch overtook Augspurger for the lead. Nosbisch would take it to the house while Whitener clinched his Bubba Raceway Park championship and put the gap at 70 for tomorrow. Augspurger is now over 100 out after a 3rd place finish with Bo Allen and Richard Ferry the top 5.

The 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks had a race marred by cautions including a lap 2 incident when Curtis Clark spun in turn 2 and Mike Stalnaker climbed over the hood of Clark’s #0. Both were okay but their nights were over. Robert Ray had been leading the race but the restart allowed Jeff Stalnaker, Jr. to steal the lead from him. Just a little past halfway a wild crash happened when Bubba Durbin and Jason Gamble tapped each other in turn 4. Gamble snapped sideways then spun and clipped John Thorpe’s #114. Thorpe went for a wild ride that tested the suspension and the roll cage. All involved were okay but Thorpe was disgusted. In the end Chad Scranton took the win after he led half the race. Stalnaker finished 2nd with Jonathan Appleby right behind him. James Sullivan, III and Bubba Durbin rounded out the top 5.

The Rent-N-Roll Gladiators had a wild race that started with Stephen Frankland, the British Bulldog, leading. A lap 5 caution for Devan Pegal gave Steve Johnson the chance he needed to take the lead. Johnson ended up taking the win with Frankland behind him. David Pate was 3rd with Todd Roberts and Pegal the top 5.

Tomorrow we wrap up 4 more championships. Bubba’s Pit Stop opens at 1 with some college football on! Pits open at 4, grandstands at 5, and racing is scheduled to start at 7. The Scorpion Racing Products Modifieds, 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks, and Rent-N-Roll Gladiators return with the Barfield Law Group Mini Stocks and Buddy’s Home Furnishings Limited Late Models. For more info check out Twitter (@BubbaRacewayPrk), Facebook, www.bubbaracewaypark.com, or call us at 352-622-9400! See ya at the track!
