Knaub Claims “Thunder on the Farm” 358 Late Model Win
Hanover, PA –Dover’s Gene Knaub achieved a personal goal in claiming the win in the 50-lap “Thunder on the Farm” feature for 358 late models at Trail-Way Speedway Friday night.
“This is my favorite track,” said Knaub upon exiting the Superior Homes/Ricke Brothers/Route 30 Seafood #1 in victory lane, “I run a lot of race tracks, and this place is awesome!”
The “Thunder on the Farm” event was one of the few that Knaub had never won, and it was one of his priorities heading into the 2009 season.
A pill draw placed Knaub seventh for the start.
Outside front row starter Kyle Lear grabbed the lead over polesitter Bobby Beard at the outset and led the first 33 laps before Knaub drove under the #151 to take the point. From there, the race was for second, with Knaub crossing the finish line 9.59 seconds ahead of Mike Walls. Walls caught Lear for second on the final two turns, and in doing so, claimed the 2009 358 late model track championship by a mere eight points over Bobby Beard.
Shaun Jones started 16th and advanced through the field to finish fourth, with Brian Lesley fifth.
Sixth through tenth were Countryside Auto Sales hard charger Charles Potts (who started 21st), 15th-starting Nat Tuckey, Craig Wagaman, 20th-starting Rance Garlock, and Ronnie Dennis.
Grant Adams was uninjured after flipping his late model on the back stretch of lap 33, bringing out the only red flag of the event.
Knaub’s win, his second in-a-row at Trail-Way, was worth $1,000 plus a $200 bonus from Barry Rinehart at Countryside Auto Sales.
Heat winners for the 25 358 Late Models were Knaub, Mike Zeigler, and Robby Garlock.
Sam Gallagher added an exclamation point to his 2009 track title by winning the 50-lap thundercar “Thunder on the Farm” feature.
Gallagher started 11th and worked his way through the field to drive around Jamie Zentmyer for the lead on lap 41.
Zentmyer started on the pole and led the first four laps before Bryan Walls grabbed the top spot and led the next 23 laps. That’s when the two got together racing for the lead, with Walls ending up against the outside wall and Zentmyer reclaiming the
lead for the next 12 laps.
After making the race-winning pass, Gallagher held off Zentmyer the rest of the way, with Danny Beard getting by Zentmyer for second on the final lap. Gallagher’s final margin of victory was 1.9 seconds over Beard.
Fourth and fifth were Countryside Auto Sales hard charger Marshall McMullen (who started 15th) and Rick Weaver.
Rounding out the top ten were Todd Miller, Allen Cullum, Justin Bittle, Robert Stough and Garrett Shover.
David Prunkl, Beard, and Gallagher picked up the heat wins for the 21 Thundercars.
In the 20-lap All-American Outlaw feature, polesitter Hunter Nester grabbed the early race lead and, despite multiple cautions, maintained the top spot to pick up the win. Ninth starting Fred Cullum crossed second with Joe Alder, Jessie Morrison, and 15th-starting Allen Daniels completing the top five.
Heat wins for the 21 All American Outlaws went to Hunter Nester and Dylan Keim.
Daryl Hanson continued his domination of the limited stocks, taking home the $200 top prize in the 15-lap “Thunder on the Farm” championship.
A pill draw put Hanson third at the start, and he grabbed the lead from second-starting Brian Walls on lap four. Hanson led the rest of the way, with Walls settling for second and Robert Nicklow third.
Chad Weaver’s fourth-place finish was good enough to claim the 2009 Trail-Way limited stock title. Shannon Weaver completed the top five.
Robbie Carroll and Hanson claimed the heat wins for the 24 Limited Stocks on hand.
