Starmer captures long delayed win at I-35 Speedway and Woods, Claxton, Roberts and Cleghorn win again.
With three weeks of rainout I-35 Speedway was back in action tonight, but we had to battle two more problems and the officials and drivers were up to the task. After a lengthy delay due to a full moon and ambulance issues the races at I-35 Speedway finally got underway after 9pm and the last checker flew by 11:37pm. Not a bad night to enjoy 12 heat races and 5 action pack feature events.
Starting out the night were the IMCA Northern Sport Mods and Dale Marriott almost made a triumphant return to racing as he led to almost lap 12 before the young hot shoe out of Iowa, Shay Woods snuck by and captured his second win of 2010. Marriott would hold on to the second position. After problems in his heat race Mike Tanner had a good run and won the hard charger award.
Eric Stanton and Cody Cleghorn had their hands full tonight. Not only did they have to battle each other again but they also had to run down a driver that is due to get his first win. Danny Martin seemed to have the field covered tonight as he led the entire race up until the white flag lap coming out of turn 2. Stanton would eventually lose power and have to retire for the final 3 laps and Cleghorn would get by Martin on the last lap to capture the IMCA Hobby Stock checkers. Cleghorn is taking home double trophies as he won the hard charger.
We may not have the quantity of cars in the Grand National division but we sure have the quality as once again the Grand National division had a great green to checkered race. A great battle between Mike Taylor Jr. and Gene Claxton had the fans on their feet. Add in some Jason Anderson for a handful of laps and it shaped up to be a great race. With four to go Taylor’s car picked up a push and that allowed Claxton to get by and pick up the win. Dean Wray had a good run as he took home the hard charger.
Thomas Roberts returned to victory lane in the Stock Car division as a good field of 19 took to the track. Early on it was Jeff Dixon who has had a rough go of it the last few weeks leading but Roberts would eventually sneak by and rack up win number four on the year. Kevin Anderson had a great showing his first night out this season as he took home the hard charger award.
I believe tonight the sentimental favorite in the IMCA Modifieds was Bud Wilson. Bud has had a rough time this week as well not to mention a rough season trying to keep the car on the track and off the infield. Tonight it looked like the monkey was off his back until the last lap coming out of turn 2 when something broke on the car. “Stormin” Steve Starmer weaved around Wilson and went on to capture his first win of 2010 at I-35 Speedway. Starmer has looked good so far this season so this win was long over due. Doug Keller picked up the hard charger award.
Next week it’s double features as we make up the June 5th rainout and fireworks, not to mention an added bonus to the Grand Nationals with $500 on the line and the Stock Cars go for $400 to win! For full results check out www.speednetdirect.com.
