The fourth annual Joe Shear Classic and the ASA Midwest Tour Super Late Models return to Madison International Speedway for the season opener on Sunday, May 6th. The top super late model drivers in the Midwest will be at MIS to take on Wisconsin’s Fastest Half-Mile. The Madison Late Models will also be in action making it a “must see” early season racing
On-track activity is slated to begin at 11:30 AM with practice sessions for both divisions followed by qualifying at 1:10 PM. Opening ceremonies begin at 2:15 PM with racing set for 2:30 PM.
The race is in memory of Shear who won 72 features in his career at Madison including track championships in 1973, 1974, 1980, and 1982. In honor of Shear’s number 36, the 100 lap “Classic” will take a break at lap 64 before returning shortly for the 36 lap dash. “It’s hard to believe we are rolling into our 4th annual JSC. We have made some small changes to our format that will make the qualifying procedures very exciting for the fans and we’ll be breaking at lap 64 this year to run a 36 lap dash to the win. It’s a special event, and means a lot to me and our team and I truly believe with all of the positive changes a the track and the huge advertising plan that MIS is doing for this event that it will be big for everyone, stated Steve Einhaus of the ASA Midwest Tour.
Last year’s winner Ross Kenseth will be back to defend his title. Previous winners of the Joe Shear Classic are Steve Carlson (2010), and Nathan Haseleu (2009).
