Hampton, GA- In a battle decided by seven points William Byron brought the 2013 Thursday Thunder Young Lions championship back to Charlotte, NC after recording a fourth place finish in round ten of the Atlanta Motor Speedway series.
Byron lined up his No. 25 Doug Stevens prepared machine in the third starting spot for the 20 lap Fun Junction sponsored main event. Byron’s goal was to keep the leaders in sight and finish in the top five to record his first-ever championship in his rookie season.
“To win a championship in my first season is incredible,” stated the happy racer. “Doug Stevens gave me a great car all season and I want to thank him for his professionalism.”
Byron recorded four wins in the ten race series and had only one race outside the top five, giving the rising sophomore at Charlotte Country Day School enough points to hold off his tough competition.
“I really wanted to win the championship,” added Byron. “It felt like the longest 20 lap race of my career.”
William is back in action this Monday and Tuesday at Charlotte Motor Speedway where rounds nine and ten of the Jack in the Box Summer Shootout will be held. Byron holds a slim 35 point lead in the Young Lions division going into the last two nights of the hotly contested series at the tight quarter mile oval.
