Ashland, WI — The ABC Raceway will offer a healthy purse to its premier weekly division this Saturday night.
The three-eighths-mile red-clay oval will be the sight of the fifth annual “Modified Mayhem” special event, to be presented by the Bad River Lodge, Casino & Convention Center of Odanah. WISSOTA Modifieds from throughout the region will be on hand to compete for an $800 feature winner’s check.
The track’s WISSOTA Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds and Pure Stocks, and its ABC Six-Cylinders, will also be on hand for a full PolyDome Dirt Track Series program of heat-race and feature action. Only five regular-season race nights remain, and championship battles in all classes are still being very hotly contested.
Although there have only been four previous offerings of this particular event, regular-season specials for the “big Mods” have been held in various iterations at this award-winning Northern Wisconsin race facility since at least 1988, when the first “Chuck Anderson Race of Champions” event was held. In 2002, the Mods were offered a unique “triple-header” program, with three A-features in one night; this proved very popular with both fans and drivers.
In 2006 Como Oil & Propane began promotion of a highly-touted multi-track series in the Northland featuring the Modifieds, offering the division two big-time, big-money events at Ashland. However, the Como Mod Series was an even bigger hit and the “triple-header” idea faded away after 2007.
When the Como Series folded after the 2011 campaign, the Raceway staff decided to continue offering a big-money mid-season show for the division, and the first of the “Mayhem” events took place in 2012, with Curt Myers of Cameron claiming the honors. ABC regulars Steve Stuart of Ashland (2013), Jeff Spacek of Phillips (’14), and Kevin Eder of Ashland (’15) have held visitor drivers at bay to cash the winning paychecks from each of the past three events.
The Raceway’s live pre-race radio program, “Z-93 Race Night,” will air Saturday on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, and online at www.wbszfm.com, from 4:30-6 pm with up-to-date track news and weather information. Hot laps begin at 6:15 pm, followed by the first green flag of the night at 7. Adult tickets are just $11 each, and kids ages 12 and under are admitted free with a paid adult admission.
The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. For raceday information call (715) 682-4990, or log on anytime to the track’s website, www.abcraceway.com.
