WHEATLAND, Missouri – Aaron Reutzel held off Sam Haftertepe Jr. to claim the Lucas Oil ASCS Bob Westphal Memorial Sizzlin’ Summer Speedweek Finale on Saturday night at Lucas Oil Speedway.
Reutzel’s third ASCS Winged Sprint Series victory of the season also clinched the seven-race Sizzlin’ Speedweek points chase as well for the Clute, Texas driver.
Reutzel started from the pole after winning his heat race and set a blistering pace in the feature after the green flag flew.
Blake Hahn was able to get past Justin Henderson and into second place on lap four and started to pressure Reutzel when the race’s first caution came out on lap eight as Harli White spun in turn four.
“Blake’s the one that really worried me because I knew he could run the bottom pretty good,” Reutzel said. “The bottom was going away for us. I figured I had to abort it and I did at the right time.”
Using the top side to his advantage, Reutzel built a comfortable lead through the middle stage of the 30-lap race. But as he closed in on lapped traffic, Haftertepe began to close in and make it interesting.
But Reutzel expertly weaved through the slower cars and, when Haftertepe made a bid on the white-flag lap, he was able to prevail by about four car lengths at the finish.
“I was going through lapped cars pretty good, so I figured I had a big gap,” Reutzel said. “I was just cruising there and when Sam showed me a nose, I decided to take back off on that last lap. We were plenty good there.”
Haftertepe, of Sunnyvale, Texas, continues to sit comfortable atop the national point standings. He gave credit to the winner.
“He didn’t really make any mistakes,” Hafertepe said of Reutzel. “We did whatever we could do. We had a pretty good race car. Hats off to Aaron. He did a really good job tonight.”
Hahn, of Sapulpa, Okla., held on to finish third and Johnny Herrera of Albuquerque, N.M., finished fourth.
Boyles earns WAR feature win: Clinton Boyles of Greenwood, Mo., took command with 15 laps remaining and drove away to the 25-lap Lucas Oil POWRi WAR Sprint feature over runner-up Korey Weyant.
Chance Morton, who started outside of Boyles on row one, took a wild ride on lap two when he rolled his car entering turn two, landing it wheels down after making contact with the wall. Morton, of Coweta, Okla., walked away uninjured.
Wyatt Burks, starting inside of row four, advanced to second by lap three when the race’s second caution flew for Rob Hockett’s spin.
Burks battled past Boyles and into the lead coming out of turn four to complete lap five. Boyles pressured the new leader over the next five laps before taking command on lap 10 and driving away to his third WAR feature win of the season.
Series points leader Weyant, of Springfield, Ill., was second and Burks, of Topeka, Kan., wound up third.
“Weyant got by me in one and two and I knew that I had to hustle around,” Boyles said. “I knew if I stayed patient, we would get there and it all ended up working out. I’m sure they were right behind me fighting for it, but it was a lot of fun.”
