In addition to Schrader, Nextel Cup star Kenny Wallace will also make a special appearance to challenge the Home Pride Pro Modified drivers in his St. Louis Cardinals sponsored modified. Schrader will race in the Dodge Super Late Model division in his own Federated Auto Parts sponsored Super Late Model. Grand Nationals and the Stereo West Auto Toys Hobby Stocks will also be on the card that night.
There was speculation that Schrader would also drive a locally owned modified that evening but Schrader confirmed by phone that he wouldn’t. “I want to concentrate on my late model and put on as good a show as possible for the fans” Schrader said. “Driving two totally different cars on the same night doesn’t give me the time necessary to do that” he added.
The month kicks off with Allstate Insurance presents the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series on Saturday, May 6th and Kosiski Auto Parts presents Midwest Auto Recyclers Night plus the Dodge Weekly Series on Saturday, May 13 th.
The new Kids Race Car Ride Night on Saturday, May 20 th will give kids 10 and under a chance to ride in the race cars at intermission. The night is also set to be a special fund raiser night for the Ralston Public Schools to benefit their Industrial Arts programs. The schools will be selling special tickets for the night and a portion of the proceeds of each ticket will be donated to the Industrial Arts program.
USG, a leading manufacturer of building materials for the construction and remodeling industries, presents the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series on Sunday, May 21 st and then the month closes out with the hugely popular Memorial Day weekend “Alphabet Soup Race” presented by You Local Area Dodge Dealers on Sunday, May 28 th featuring the stars and cars of the WDRL, MLRA and NCRA. Special $5 off coupons will be available at local area Dodge Dealers in western Iowa and eastern Nebraska beginning the week of May 8 th leading up to the event.
The annual event will also feature the Home Pride Pro Modifieds and Grand National Late Models in a special non-points event of their own. The Stereo West Auto Toys Hobby Stocks, originally scheduled as part of the show, will have the night off and will be treated to two complimentary adult grandstand tickets by the Speedway as special thanks for their weekly participation. The complimentary free tickets will be given to the Hobby Stock drivers with perfect attendance at the track’s regular weekly events held so far this season.
“As we reviewed the past history of the event and the large Late Model car count we felt that the overall car count had become too large to present a timely show for our fans and competitors” said General Manager Tom Gutowski. “Giving the Hobby Stocks the night off will let us concentrate the action among 3 classes and highlight the intense Super Late Model competition even more” Gutowski added.
I-80 Speedway is the only NASCAR sanctioned track in Nebraska, hosts the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series on Saturday and Sunday nights. Only one other NASCAR member track in the US hosts the Dodge Weekly Series more than one time week. Sunday’s program competes in Division II of the Dodge Weekly Series while Saturday’s program competes in Division III.
Little Sunset Speedway (LSS), NRP’s go-karting facility, kicks off its weekly point season on Friday May 5 th and will host the International Karting Federation’s (IKF) Briggs & Stratton Midwest Speedway Tour National event on May 13 th & 14 th. LSS has also introduced a new Spec. Champ Kart to the area and over 40 of the karts are expected to compete on a weekly basis. “The Champ karts have full roll cages, stock car style aluminum seats, 5 point seat belts, sealed spec. engines and spec. tires to control technology and keep the costs affordable” said Gutowski. “We have 3 different classes that start at age 5 and accommodate anyone, including adults” he added.
Meanwhile, not to be left out of the headlines, Soaring Edge Motocross Park (SEMP), NRP’s motocross facility, kicks off its 2006 season with a NMA Four Corners National Qualifier on Sunday, May 7 th. The track began hosting events in 2005 and is in its second full year of operation. “The track portion has been a work in progress from the start and is earning a reputation as a great place to ride and race” said Gutowski. “We’ve recently added a TT and Quad track for the 2006 season and look to expand our rider base” he added. SEMP is open weekly on Wednesday and Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons for practice riding for a small fee. In addition to the special May 7 th event, 4 other race dates are slated for Saturday nights on June 10 th, July 1 st, September 2 nd and October 14 th and are part of the newly formed Heartland MX Series.
