Wet, Cold Conditions Force ABC Raceway Cancellation

Ashland, WI, — After passionate discussions in both directions, the ABC Raceway’s Board of Directors opted for the difficult decision to postpone the track’s 54th season opener scheduled for Saturday night.

The track itself would have been ready and possibly quite racy for so early in the season, and there was no chance of rain for Saturday night. But cold, soaking showers earlier in the week left the Raceway’s pit and parking areas quite soggy, and a forecast calling for mid-30s temperatures and northeasterly winds would not have made for comfortable conditions even for the heartiest of race fans.

“(Board members) went back and forth wrestling over this decision,” Raceway president Eric Erickson stated after the meeting. “Could we get enough fans to show up in the cold, would the track and the grounds hold up, how late would the show run with the chance that we might have to grade the track a couple of times. This was not an easy decision to make. “Ultimately the majority of our Board members voted in favor of cancelling Saturday’s show.”

Erickson also pointed to the fact that the weather that has nailed the region over the past four to six weeks has crippled the all-volunteer staff of the Raceway in its usual pre-season preparations. “We certainly didn’t need that 15 inches of snow four weeks ago,” he said. “We’ve been forced to squeeze a month’s worth of work into about five good days. And there’s still plenty to do (to get the facility ready).”

The 2018 season opener has now been pushed to Saturday, May 19. Heartland Communications Group of Ashland will be the presenting sponsor of the five-division program that will include WISSOTA Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds and Pure Stocks, plus the Raceway’s own Six-Cylinder class. The grandstands will open at 5 pm, hot laps will start at 6:15, and the first green flag of the season should drop at 7 pm.

Admission for adults is $11 in the grandstands, and children ages 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult. The pit gate admission price is $25. “Z-93 Race Night” will air on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, and stream on, from 4:30-6 pm with live pre-race track news updates and weather information.

The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. For raceday information call (715) 682-4990, or log on to the track’s website,
