Tuscon Raceway Park To Host a Super Late Model Event for a Starting Spot in ASA’s South Africa Event

November 20th, 2009

Tucson Raceway Park, an ASA sanctioned racetrack, announces the $5000.00 to win Drivetech Racing School Super Late Model 150 on January 8th and 9th 2010. Along with the purse, Drivetech Racing School has announced that the winner of the race
will also win a starting spot in a Drivetech provided race car at the ASA Championship between the Continents race at Phakisa Freeway Oval in Welkom, Free State South Africa on Sunday, January 31, 2010.

“We’re very excited to offer a fantastic purse for this event and the opportunity for the driver and a guest to join us for an all expenses paid trip to South Africa to join our other Drivetech racers for the inaugural ASA race at the Phakisa Freeway,” said Mark Ebert of Drivetech. Ebert continues, “Tucson Raceway Park has already received inquiries from as far away as Montana and Washington, and we anticipate many more teams from the eastern US will take this opportunity to come take their shot at over 25k in prize money and of course sending a driver to compete at the 1.5 mile Phakisa Freeway for the inaugural race there is certainly the opportunity of a lifetime.”

“Mark and his group at Drivetech have done an awesome job in helping us prepare for our inaugural ASA Transcontinental Series event in South Africa, especially with helping us get South African drivers certified to race with us in this event,” Dennis Huth, ASA President said. “For him to host this event and give another driver an opportunity of a lifetime to compete in an event in South Africa is incredible and we can’t wait to see who that winning driver will be.”

It will be great to see the finest drivers from many different tracks take their shot at this purse and their chance to race in Phakisa. We will field at least four entries in the first Championship between the Continents race, and we certainly feel that by bringing the winner from a Super Late Model race of this magnitude with us we’ll have another competitive car and the opportunity to bring home the big trophy and a bunch of money back to the states with us,” concludes Ebert. Wilmot Raceway Gets a Fresh Start as an ASA Member Track

May 4th, 2009

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - Wilmot Raceway, a 1/3-mile dirt track located between Milwaukee, WI and Chicago, IL, will start its 2009
season under new management along with joining the ASA Member Track program. Two things that long time fans of the famous speedway will be excited to know as it prepares to open its season on Saturday, May 16th.

The first thing the fans will notice is that the track will be under the new name of Wilmot Raceway and it will be managed by the Kenosha County Fair Association. The KCFA will run 13-15 race dates including five sprint specials featuring the Bumper-To-Bumper IRA/ASA Sprint Series.

“The sprints are strong here, especially IRA, which is sanctioned by ASA, as we draw close to 40 cars every time they’re here. Other dates feature Modifieds, Street Stocks, Mini-Sprints, and Fearless 4’s,” Randall Rossi, Kenosha County Fair President stated. “Of course a Demo Derby and Tractor Pull appear on the schedule in addition to the regular race nights. A Late Model event is hoped to be added yet for 09, and an October special(s) featuring numerous area divisions were just announced.”

Along with deciding their 2009 schedule the KCF also thought it was best to join the ASA Member Track program, “We think it’s good to put ourselves with an established sanctioning group like ASA,” Rossi explained. “Some other nearby tracks like Madison, The Dells, and Illiana plus the area’s most popular touring series like the ASA Midwest Tour and of course the IRA Outlaw Sprints, which are just huge around here, have gone with ASA. We believe that by putting ourselves with a proven sanction will show our fans and racers that we are serious about stepping up our program.”

Not only do they see the benefit of being with the American Speed Association, they also see a positive for their competitors as well, “Well being involved with a highly recognized sanction should be an automatic positive. The insurance program of course made us feel good about making the move. Having something in common with other successful area tracks has to be good,” Rossi stated. “We want this new endeavor of running our own facility to be successful and believe this move will expedite that process. We want our racers to feel good about our program, and our fans to know that we intend to treat our racers well. We have already brought our purses up for 09 to put them equal to other area venues running similar classes, and we’re tweaking the rulebook to be a little more universal too.”

Rossi feels they have put together an exciting 2009 schedule that will be perfect for their fans to visit Wilmot Raceway as it is the only track literally between Milwaukee and Chicago. “Our Fair week is certainly motorsports based, we’ve got the 2-day IRA show of course, but we have 2 support classes each night including the Vintage Mods which was the norm here 30-50 years ago. We have a few specials planned for the Modifieds and Street Stocks too. We need to grow all our classes. This was a sprint track
for a long time too; we hope the specials will keep the interest while we grow our other divisions, as we need those divisions to be strong before we can run sprints again weekly. Our overall car count needs to increase and we believe this is the way to do it initially. We have big plans for a couple October specials too which should draw cars that haven’t raced here much over the past few years; hopefully they’ll enjoy themselves and look at racing with us more in the future.”

Rossi and his fellow KCF members realize they are in for a learning experience but have a great group of people to give their support and advice, “I admit we in the Fair Board are in the midst of a big education curve, however we have people like Steve Sinclair from the IRA, and local racing legend Joe Roe helping us as well as many others. We have raced on these grounds for over 50 years; there is a lot of tradition here that unfortunately began slipping away. We won’t let that happen. We want this to be a successful deal for everyone and definitely believe the ASA relationship will show everyone we’re serious, not to mention the knowledge and advice Dennis Huth can share with us. Wilmot Raceway is the ONLY remaining track between Chicago & Milwaukee. The potential here is huge and he saw the track’s popularity starting to fade the past few years, particularly on the weekly shows as the specials still remained strong, but we need to get the weekly show built up again, by going ASA and treating the racers and fans with respect, and providing some shows which highlight each of the classes, we believe we can make Wilmot the well respected venue it was for so many years. We have a very passionate fan base in this area, we will do everything we can to make everyone’s experience to Wilmot Raceway an enjoyable one.”

“We are excited to welcome Wilmot Raceway to the ASA Member Track program,” Dennis Huth, American Speed Association President stated. “If you are a dirt track fan or just a race fan period, you owe yourself a visit to one of the more historical racing facilities in the United States. We are proud they are carrying the ASA banner this season. We are a national organization that is here to help in any way we can, whether it’s a long established track or one that is making major changes like Wilmot.”

New Shangri-La II Motor Speedway Excited to Join as an ASA member Track!

April 4th, 2009

DAYTONA BEACH, FL – The excitement is in the air for the new Shangri-La II Motor Speedway in Tioga Center, NY. The new concrete oval will host its first event on Sunday, May 24th and will be a Level One American Speed Association Member Track with its competitors competing for the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship.

The track is still under construction through the watchful eye of track owner George Swansbrough. In fact, on their track website for his contact info it simply states “NONE He’s too busy building the track!” But, Amy Stilson the track director states that the message boards are flooded with positive comments about the new track opening, “George and family have been
involved in racing for many years now. George is well known in the racing community and is very excited about owning and operating his own track,” Stilson stated. “We have received many well wishes from the racing community and they can’t wait for us to open.”

Some of the comments include:

“Standing along the frontstretch, one could feel the history that will be made here, names we have not even heard of yet will go down in racing lore.”

“I hope everyone appreciates the unique opportunity this new facility really is. At a time when most of the forces of the world are working against racing, we are witnessing a minor miracle, a potentially valuable asset to us all.”

“Can’t wait for the place to open and just want to say thanks so much to George for doing a good thing.”

“For someone in this economy to make this commitment is outstanding and really hard to believe. Hope for nothing but success. High quality is a must in the facility, food and the racing. Word of mouth will be the key to packing the place weekly. What an opportunity to get it right you have. Can’t wait!!!”

The new track will be a ½-mile concrete oval with 15 degrees of banking in the corners and 6-7 degrees on the straights.

The excitement of the new facility is not only coming from the fans but from the track employees itself, especially with joining the fast growing American Speed Association Member Track program. “Being a part of ASA is exciting for us. We asked for input from some of the drivers and the racing community with regard to becoming a part of ASA. We received nothing but good comments about ASA,” Stilson stated. “Although we haven’t officially informed our drivers yet, we feel they will all be as excited as we are about joining ASA and all it has to offer not only us as a track but drivers as well. Everyone is excited about this track becoming a part of ASA. We are excited because our drivers will get the best of the best insurance in the industry and the opportunity to become a National Champion and possibly have the opportunity to drive/test for Joe Gibbs. We look forward to
meeting and learning from other ASA Member Tracks. Although we have been in the oval track racing community for years, we have never owned and operated a speedway. We have always been behind the wheel and in the grandstands.”

Stilson expanded about their drivers competing for the Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship, “The Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil ASA Member Track National Championship will encourage drivers to join our ASA Sanctioned events and be given the national attention not only on a weekly basis but at the possible opportunity to show their talent to
Joe Gibbs.”

Their opening day plans include 100-lap feature events for both the Late Model and Modified divisions. Their weekly divisions will include Late Models, Modifieds, Sport Modifieds and Street Stocks.

While they will have the new oval, they are also proud of their dragstrip. Stilson stated they have a busy season at both facilities planned along with a special price for the fans, “We are planning some special races that include the NORA modifieds, Cup Lites and Tobias SpeedSTR’s and a few others are in the works. We plan on fireworks throughout the season as well. One
of the other items that makes our track interesting is there is also a drag strip on the property right next door to the new speedway. Our admission will be $10.00 for regular weekly racing and it will include admission to both tracks for one price. The Drag Strip has been in business for 5 years now and is sanctioned by IHRA and has been a huge success.”

“We are very excited to have Shangri-La II Motor Speedway as part of the ASA Member Track program,” Dennis Huth, ASA President stated. “The anticipation of their opening is shared not only with the fans in the area but across the United States as we are seeing a positive with a new track opening in an era where we are seeing tracks close. I commend George Swansbrough and Amy Stilson on what they are doing.”

This Is Not Your Father’s American Speed Association

March 15th, 2009

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The American Speed Association was founded in 1968 as a Midwest Super Late Model Touring Series. On that premise, it was tremendously successful with a strong fan base and some of the most talented drivers in the business with names like Rusty Wallace, Mark Martin, Dick Trickle, Mike Eddy and so many other champions.

But the ASA of today resembles nothing of its predecessor. Since Dennis Huth took over the sanctioning body, ASA racing can now be found north-to-south, east-to-west, and all points in between. Oh yeah, on dirt tracks as well as pavement; stock cars and sprint cars alike all carry the red and gray ASA logo.

ASA sanctions more than 800 events a year now, starting at the weekly track level. The ASA Member Track program has more than 35 racetracks across the country generating the type of short track excitement that the foundation of the ASA was built upon.

The ASA Member Track program was initiated by Huth in 2004 and today includes several of the most renowned facilities in the country. One of the first to sign with the program was Madison (Wis.) International Speedway, and today other notable facilities include Rocky Mountain Speedway (Salt Lake City, Utah), Illiana Motor Speedway (Chicago, Il), Desoto Super Speedway (Bradenton, FL), Adirondack International Speedway (Beaver Falls, N.Y.), Meridian Speedway (Boise, Idaho) and Orange Show Speedway (San Bernardino, Calif.).

There are a number of dirt tracks in the program, something that fans of the original ASA probably never thought they would see. But today, stands are filled at Hartford (Mich.) Motor Speedway, Skagit Speedway (Skagit, Wash.), Silver Dollar Raceway (Chico, Calif.), East Bay Raceway Park (Tampa, Fla.) and others to see Late Models, Sprints, and others “fling the mud” ASA-style.

“The ASA Member Track program has really grown quickly over the past five years and I think we can attribute a number of things to that,” said Huth, president of the American Speed Association. “Obviously, there is a 40-plus years of history of providing exciting short track action and building champions and people want to be part of. On top of that we have done some innovative things with our exceptional insurance partner WSIB Motorsports Insurance that nobody else in the industry is matching, such as the door-to-door coverage for members during race events. So, while some people never saw the ASA growing beyond the Midwest, today we are literally providing coast-to-coast racing.”

Founded as a regional touring series, the ASA still sticks to those roots, and then some. The ASA Kwik Trip Midwest Tour is the closest thing to the original foundations in that region of the country. A 13-date schedule will keep the Super Late Model teams busy this year as they visit tracks in Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota and Indiana.

This tour has proven so successful that the ASA RC Cola/MoonPie Southeastern Tour brings the same level of excitement and enthusiasm across the South. This group will fight for the checkered flag eight times in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee. And there is even an ASA Northwest Tour which clearly proves that stock cars are still a big focus at the American Speed Association in the great Pacific Northwest.

Today’s ASA also has a truck series. The Verve! ASA Speed Truck Challenge was one of the first regional racing tours to sign with the ASA and have entertained countless fans with their door-to-door style of action. Their 13-race schedule includes stops at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Toyota Speedway at Irwindale (Calif.), and features racing in California, Nevada and Arizona. The International Sport Compact Auto Racing Series (ISCAR, formerly the Goody’s DASH Series) is now running under the ASA banner as well as the Southern Modified Race Tour for Modifieds.

Even Sprint Car fans have a couple of ASA touring series to follow, a far cry from the roots of the organization. The Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Car Series hauls the dirt, and the ASA Northwest Sprintcar Racing Series sizzles on asphalt, and both bring big-league open wheel thrills to the American Speed Association.

The Pro-Autosports program is one of the most unique among the ASA Regional Racing series. This Southwest tour visits the road courses of Firebird Raceway (Phoenix) and Sandia Motorsports Park (Albuquerque) and offers high-performance driver education, track time and time trials for street cars as well as sports car club and professional racing programs. Nowhere else in the American Speed Association can you see Ford Mustangs on the track with BMW’s, Mazda’s, Ferrari’s and other performance vehicles at the same time.

“We’ve certainly have come a long way from the foundations that Rex Robbins set for us so many years ago, but we still focus on providing the best racing action in the industry which is what he established. And while we may have hit a little rough patch a few years ago, the ASA is alive and well and is growing better than ever,” Huth explained. “It may seem like the ASA has branched out beyond the stock car core, and we certainly have, but each move was done methodically with the purpose of giving the ASA-brand and our members the national exposure everyone deserves.”

“Of course, this type of expansion could never have been accomplished without the dedication and hard work of all the track operators and regional series owners that placed their faith in the ASA and those four-decades of history and relevance that we have in the motorsports community.”

The ASA Member Track program is comprised of more than 35 short tracks around the United States, as well as a variety of regional and national touring series.
