Forestville, PA -Mother Nature may have attempted to take away this year, however, Big Diamond Raceway is preapred to give
back. Speedway management recently announced that Friday August 7 is T102/House Doctors Fan Appreciation Night.
The 358 Modifieds will be competing in a pair of 25-lap main events, each carrying a full dollar and points payoff. Incidentally, this is the first Modified twin features program to be held since July 1, 2005 (Winners-Rick Laubach and Ray Swinehart).
Eight total events were lost to rain this season. Fans and racing teams continued to show support during these frustrating times, and Big Diamond will be awarding everyone on August 7. The 358 Modifieids (Twin 25-lap features), Sportsman, and Wooden Keg Roadrunners will be competing. An adult general admission ticket costs $15. Children 12 and under will be admitted free.
Oley’s Duane Howard, 45, currently rests within a familiar position, as he is the 358 Modified points leader. Howard, a 62-time feature winner, has won six track championships throughout his illustrious BDR career.
Five of Howard’s titles were attained during the 90s decade. Howard spent some time away from Big Diamond for a few years and returned full-time in 2005, finishing second in points for car owner Norm Hansell (who is involved in this year’s title hunt with another driver). Howard joined forces with Chad Sinon in 2006, and captured that sixth career title. Howard finished runner-up for Sinon in last year’s run for the roses.
Howard, driving the Sinon #4 Troyer powered by a MAIN Racing Engine, holds a slim 20 point lead with just a handful (six)
championship races remaining. If he achieves a seventh career track title, it would be a new speedway record.
One driver who would like to break the impressive streak of Howard titles, is Doug Manmiller, who just happens to currently occupy the second position. Manmiller, 41 of Shoemakersville, has been a consistent performer in title efforts, but is still searching for that initial track championship.
Manmiller has finished within the top five in points for the last five years for car owners such as Wink Motorsports, Manmiller Racing, MAD Motorsports, and Greg Sarangoulis. In 2009, the former go- kart standout joined forces with famed car owner Dick Biever, in the Teo-14. Although, Biever has enjoyed many successful years as a Big D. car owner, he is likewise searching for his first BDR title.
Garden State based racer Ryan Godown is currently 95 points back in the third position. Godown (Ringoes NJ) just began his weekly BDR career last season. Although Godown, 33, has endured through some tough times during his brief track history, he did pick up his first career win on June 12, and has been putting together a late season surge.
Godown’s car owner Johnny Rea is no stranger to the points championship race. Rea earned the 2002 crown with driver Keith Hoffman. In ‘09, the Teo-R1 has seen its ups and downs, but is focussed on the ultimate goal, a possible points title.
The recent headline maker has been the strong performances of Rick Laubach. On May 25, Laubach was a $5000 feature winner in his first race for car owner Norm Hansell. Since that time the Bicknell-357 has not fiinished outside of the front five, and scored a most recent victory on Friday July 24.
During the past three point seasons, Laubach has finished fourth (2008), third (2007), and sixth (2006). The 36 year old racer from Hellertown is currently 135 points out of the standings lead. Perhaps, the driver forced with the largest hurdle to climb is Mohnton’s Jeff Strunk, who is fifth in the standings, 210 markers out of the lead. Strunk, 40, is certainly prepared for the challenge as he is the defending two-time track champion, and holds six career titles. Strunk began his new season with Vince Gagliardo Sr. this year, driving the Teo-41, and won a pair of features, including the opener. Strunk is the only points racing repeat winner thus far. The August 7 double feature show could play a major role in the 2009 title fight. One driver might experience a terrific evening, others may struggle, and the points race could take on an entirely different shape. Gates open at 5:00PM, warm-ups start at 7:15PM, and qualifying begins at 7:45PM.
