Thunderhill Raceway’s racing action and fiery stunts keep fans on edge

June 10th, 2010

KYLE, TX – Saturday night (June 5) was the Kyle Chamber of Commerce Night at the Races at Thunderhill Raceway (THR) in Kyle, TX, and the racing action kept the fans on edge – featuring nine classes of feature events and the Daredevil Stunts Spectacular presented by Dr. Danger and performed by the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls.

Charles Aikin claimed his first TSRS Allison Legacy win this year. Aikin started in fourth and took the lead on Lap 20 of the 25-lap race. Andy Taylor won the 27-lap NasKart race, and Joey Tschoerner was awarded the trophy in the 20-lap Thunder Stock race after Bryon Reed was given a post-race technical infraction for ride height.

Terry James claimed victory in the 15-lap SportMod race after passing former TSRS Late Model driver, Teresa Gural, for the lead on the second lap.

The caution-filled ASA A-Line Super Stock race became a matter of survival for the 12 drivers who took the green flag. Brent Reeves started on the pole and lead the first four laps until the first caution was thrown. Clint LaFont, who is the current leader in the ASA National Championship standings, started near the back of the field and was working his way to the front. However, LaFont, Shawn Paul Lehman and JC Pilcher tried to go three-wide in Turn 3 on Lap 7, and Lehman and LaFont tangled. LaFont sustained severe front-end damaged and was towed to the pits. Mason Teague, who was the 2009 THR Thunder Stock Champion, took the lead on the restart and held on for the checkered flag. LaFont was officially scored with an 8th place finish.

After turning in the fastest qualifying time for the TSRS Late Models, Bobby Teer, Jr., drew the pole position. He held off hard charges by Robert Barker and Austin Self and managed to maintain the lead until the end of the 35-lap feature race. Teer was excited about his second consecutive career win.

Rounding out the night were the feature events for the Mini Stocks, Pro Trucks and Grand Stocks.

Brandon Spreen, who is the current points’ leader in the Mini Stocks, started out in the 12th position and quickly worked his way up through the field in the 20-lap feature event. On Lap 4, he grabbed the lead from Taylor Wright and held on for the win.

Cary Stapp continued his domination in the Pro Trucks. After turning in the fastest qualifying time, Stapp started the 30-lap feature race in the second position. He passed pole-sitter Jim Albert for the lead on Lap 4 and claimed his third consecutive win at Thunderhill Raceway.

In the Grand Stocks, Brandon Gaither started on the pole and battled with Mike Farish for some close side-by-side racing for several laps. After taking the lead on Lap 12, Farish was unable to maintain control coming out of Turn 4 on the outside and hit the front straightway wall, almost head-on, to bring out the red flag. Marcia Moore then took over the challenge for the lead, but Gaither held on to the front position until the end of the 20-lap feature race. It was Gaither’s first feature win, and the victory will move him up to second place in the points’ race, behind Moore.

Four fiery stunts were presented by Dr. Dangers throughout the evening and awed the fans – including a Redneck Ring O’Fire, 50-Yard Flash, Suicide Car Explosion and an Explosive Car Jump (into a travel trailer).

The racing action will return to Thunderhill Raceway on Saturday, June 19, with double-feature events for the ASA A-Line Super Stocks.

The complete results for all of the June 5 racing events at Thunderhill Raceway are shown below.

Thunderhill Raceway looks to past, present and future

April 25th, 2010

KYLE, TX - On April 18, 1998, Thunderhill Raceway (Kyle, TX) opened its gates for the first time.

This Saturday night (April 24), Thunderhill Raceway (THR) will celebrate its 12th anniversary by giving give its fans a glimpse of the past, present and future.

Tying the past to the present, the track will recognize its first race winners (from 1998) on the front straightaway during opening ceremonies - along with other drivers who raced during the track’s first event. Mary Ann Naumann, THR’s Owner and Promoter, knows firsthand about the track’s history and has been a part of it since the beginning. After watching her family race and actually becoming a driver herself at the former Longhorn Speedway (Austin, TX), Naumann switched over to the track management side of the fence in 1999 by joining Thunderhill Raceway as its General Manager. She became the Owner and Promoter in 2007.

“I know Thunderhill Raceway has a rich racing history, with many loyal race teams and fans,” commented Naumann. “I feel that it’s important to look back on what got us to where we are today, while moving forward at the same time to build on our future.”

In anticipation of its future, the track will also recognize the 2010 rookies during the opening ceremonies.

“We want to present our future stars to the fans and give them an opportunity to get to know them better,” said Naumann. “We had an autograph session during season opener a few weeks ago, but the fans didn’t know which drivers were new to stock car racing or those who were advancing to a new level of racing. I think the fans will be pleasantly surprised when they see how some of these rookie drivers perform on Saturday night.”

Ten classes are scheduled to run on Saturday night’s action-packed agenda. Grandstand gates will open at 5 pm, and the heat races will begin at 6 pm. Opening ceremonies will take place immediately after the heat races have been completed.

Terry Barden will rejoin the Texas Super Racing Series staff

December 14th, 2009

KYLE, TX - It was recently announced that The Texas Super Racing Series (TSRS) Late Models would not be traveling to other tracks in 2010 due to economic conditions. As a result, this exciting Late Models series will be included in all racing events (excluding the Crash Fest) at Thunderhill Raceway (THR) in Kyle, TX, next year - starting with the annual Racefest hosted by Full Throttle Productions.

Since the TSRS Late Models will not be considered a local class, the ASA A-Line Super Stocks will continue to be Thunderhill Raceway’s premier class.

As plans continue to be made for the 2010 racing season, yet another change is in the wings. Terry Barden (La Vernia, TX) has been named as the TSRS Race Director, effective immediately.

Barden has an extensive racing background - starting with being a crew member for Waldo Harper in 1974 at Pan American Speedway in San Antonio, TX. Barden then became a Street Stock driver in 1979 at San Antonio Speedway. Following an injury in 1987 (two broken legs), Barden retired his driver’s helmet.

Switching gears to an official capacity in 1989, Barden became the Technical Inspector at San Antonio Speedway (SAS). He was named the Race Director in 1990.

Following his tenure at SAS, Barden joined the ROMCO Super Late Models as Vice President. When USRA purchased the Super Late Model series in 2005, Barden managed the USRA Super Late Models, along with the USRA Trucks and Modifieds.

Barden then served as the Race Director for Thunderhill Raceway and TSRS in 2006 and 2007. He resigned at the end of the 2007 season to spend more time with his family.

Barden is very excited about this opportunity to rejoin the TSRS staff.

“When I went back to the track as the Grand Marshal for a TSRS race last year, I decided then and there that I wanted to get back into racing,” said Barden. “When Mary Ann approached me about the TSRS Race Director position, it didn’t take me long to give her an answer - probably less than ten minutes! I’m very excited to get back into racing, especially as part of TSRS.”

Barden’s first activity as the new TSRS Race Director will begin this Saturday, December 12, at the THR/TSRS Drivers’ Registration meeting. Following the 2P meeting with all THR/TSRS drivers, Barden will hold an open discussion with all TSRS Late Model drivers to get their input on making the series more affordable.

Mary Ann Naumann, owner and promoter for THR and TSRS, feels the addition of Barden to the TSRS staff will help the series to thrive in the years ahead.

“With Terry coming out of his retirement for TSRS, I feel that the future of this series is a win/win situation - for both TSRS and THR. As the management of THR continues to take so much of my time, I truly welcome and value Terry’s support. TSRS is so dear to my heart, and I’m excited about the future of this series. At the end of 2010, we’ll re-evaluate our traveling status and decide then what works best for those that are a part of this incredible series in 2011 and beyond.”

Stacy O’Brien (Thorndale, TX) wore two hats last year as the Race Director for both TSRS and Thunderhill Raceway. She will continue to handle the responsibility as Race Director for the THR classes, placing her entire focus on the Thunderhill Raceway drivers.

Thunderhill Raceway is a 3/8-mile, D-shaped asphalt oval track that’s located at 24801 IH-35, on the access road just north of San Marcos (TX) near Yarrington Road (Exit #210).
