William Byron Captures Young Lions Thursday Thunder Title in Rookie Season

July 27th, 2013

Hampton, GA- In a battle decided by seven points William Byron brought the 2013 Thursday Thunder Young Lions championship back to Charlotte, NC after recording a fourth place finish in round ten of the Atlanta Motor Speedway series.

Byron lined up his No. 25 Doug Stevens prepared machine in the third starting spot for the 20 lap Fun Junction sponsored main event. Byron’s goal was to keep the leaders in sight and finish in the top five to record his first-ever championship in his rookie season.

“To win a championship in my first season is incredible,” stated the happy racer. “Doug Stevens gave me a great car all season and I want to thank him for his professionalism.”

Byron recorded four wins in the ten race series and had only one race outside the top five, giving the rising sophomore at Charlotte Country Day School enough points to hold off his tough competition.

“I really wanted to win the championship,” added Byron. “It felt like the longest 20 lap race of my career.”

William is back in action this Monday and Tuesday at Charlotte Motor Speedway where rounds nine and ten of the Jack in the Box Summer Shootout will be held. Byron holds a slim 35 point lead in the Young Lions division going into the last two nights of the hotly contested series at the tight quarter mile oval.

William Byron Sweeps July 11 Atlanta Thursday Thunder Twin Features

July 14th, 2013

Hampton, GA – It was a big night for William Byron at the Atlanta Motor Speedway winning both Young Lions feature events at the quarter mile racetrack. First up was the rained out July 4th event. Byron took the lead in the opening laps and led the balance of the 20 lap feature event in his Doug Stevens-prepared No. 25 to win the makeup race in AMS’ Thursday Thunder series.

In the second Young Lions feature of the night, Byron worked his way from the back of the field to the front waging a furious battle for the lead that cleanly changed hands three times. When the dust settled William picked up his third Thursday Thunder race victory and 15th overall win in the 2013 racing season.

“It was a great night,” exclaimed the jubilant racer. “My car was awesome in both races and the second feature was so intense going from last to first. I can’t thank Doug Stevens enough for giving me a great race car.”

Byron now leads US Legends Young Lions points at Thursday Thunder, the Summer Shoot-Out at Charlotte Motor Speedway and the season-long US Legends National Points battle.
