PINELLAS PARK, FL – To get a season kick started sometimes a driver just needs some home cooking.
Pinellas Park, Florida’s Stephen Nasse found himself looking to shake a run of bad luck that has dated back to the early Spring with a race 10 minutes from his back yard. A 75-lap Super Late Model shootout at Showtime Speedway (FL) was just what the doctor ordered as the local favorite scored a win over a Florida veteran Dave Pletcher.
“It’s a great feeling to get back into victory lane,” said Nasse. “It’s not just for me, but for the crew because we have been working so hard all season and the results don’t show the effort. For me, to win at home is special with the family and, of course, a bunch of friends who don’t get to see us race when we go out of town.”
Nasse set fast time in the 75-lap Super Late Model event and out qualified another local hero David Pletcher. The Clearwater, Florida native Pletcher is a multi-time track champion in the Florida region and his son, David “Buggy” Pletcher, is the crew chief for Nasse.
“Dave is a big star out here and he has won as many championships as years that I have been alive,” said Nasse. “We out-qualified him and I had to bust his chops because I am this young guy and he’s the old guy. It meant a lot to race with him and beat him out for the win.”
Nasse recalls watching the elder Pletcher for many years as a fan and said to beat him on the race track was extremely special.
“It was not the Snowball Derby or the Winchester 400, but it meant a lot to me, myfamily and all the people on my crew,” said Nasse. “Not to mention for Buggy to beat his dad.”
Another meaningful part of Nasse’s victory was the location where it occurred. Showtime Speedway is owned by Robert Yoho, a local racer and businessman who has been a friend to the Nasse family for years. Yoho purchased the facility formerly known as Sunshine Speedway earlier in the season and breathed new life into the Pinellas Park track.
“Things have been going great so far for Showtime Speedway,” said Nasse. “I would love to get guys like Bubba Pollard, TJ Reaid and Chase Elliott to come down here and have a race. They have done a great job getting things going and so quickly. Even the drag strip has had some improvements as well.”
The next scheduled race for Stephen Nasse is the 100 lap ARCA / CRA Super Seriesevent at Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, GA. Nasse is a former winner at the track.
