Denny Eckrich dominates in Deery opener at West Liberty

April 12th, 2016

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa– Once he got into the lead, there was no catching Denny Eckrich in Saturday’s opening night Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at West Liberty Raceway.

Eckrich started the IMCA Late Model tour 40-lapper from the pole but fell back as far as third early on. He passed Jeff Aikey for the lead following a lap 14 restart and checked out on the rest of the field from that point.

The win paid $2,000 and was the Deery career fourth for Eckrich. Aikey, two-time defending series champion Justin Kay, Richie Gustin and Matt Ryan completed the top five in the lidlifter for the 30th annual series.

Eckrich set the fast pace before the caution flew for a multi-car tangle on lap six, then gave way to Aikey and Kay.

Kay tried the low line in his unsuccessful bid to pass Aikey; Eckrich made a higher line work when he drove by for the lead coming to the stand at the end of the 17th circuit.

He pulled away from that point and again following the final caution with eight laps left. Gustin, who’d won his ‘B’ feature and started 13th, made a late drive into the top four.

Corey Zeitner won the first-ever Malvern Trust and Savings Bank non-qualifier Dash for Cash and $300; winner of the $250 Sunoco Race Fuels feature qualifier drawing was Gustin.

Eckrich had also won the tour opener in 2013.

Next weekend’s doubleheader takes the Deery Series to Farley Speedway on Friday, April 15 and to Hamilton County Speedway on Saturday, April 16.

Both main events pay $2,000 to win.

Kay completes Liberty 100 Deery Weekend sweep

September 8th, 2015

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa – The Ideal Ready Mix Liberty 100 Weekend turned out to be a $7,000 weekend for Justin Kay. A night after winning the Iron Man Challenge and $1,000, Kay topped a pair of 50-lap, $3,000 to win features for IMCA Late Models at West Liberty Raceway.

The first of those Saturday victories was also Kay’s seventh this season in the Deery Brothers Summer Series. He’ll run for a record-tying fourth straight tour win on Sept. 7 at Boone Speedway, on opening night of the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s. Kay started the first feature from outside row one and led every circuit. Cautions on laps 15 and 38 kept the race closer but Kay still took the win well ahead of Jeff Aikey, Brian Harris, Tyler Droste and Tyler Bruening.

The defending series champion got another boost in his bid to repeat as second in points Andy Nezworski finished 19th. Kay also won three straight Deery features in 2013. Gary Webb, Rob Toland and Harris share the record of four consecutive tour wins, in 1994, 2004 and 2013, respectively.

Aikey set the single-season mark with nine checkers in 1998. Kay now owns 16 career Deery victories. Nezworski heard his name called as the $250 Sunoco Face Fuels feature qualifier drawing winner.

The Deery purse was paid but no points awarded for the second feature, which had considerably more excitement up front. The 16 cars on the lead lap for the first feature were inverted and Jay Johnson led the first 26 laps from the pole.

Scott Fitzpatrick challenged and the front pair made contact coming out of the second turn, with Johnson hitting the wall and Fitzpatrick spinning into the infield. Harris got the lead for the restart and stayed there through lap 42, when Kay drove by on the way to collecting his second $3,000 check of the evening.

Pit gates open at 9 a.m., heat races are at 2 p.m. and the main event will start at approximately 9 p.m. Monday at Boone. Grandstand admission is $20 and pit passes are $30. The main event pays $3,000 to win, plus a Speedway Motors Weekly Racing Bonus of as much as $1,500. Qualifying events for Hobby Stocks and Northern SportMods are also on the Labor Day card.

Final events of the 29th annual tour are Friday and Saturday, Sept. 18 and 19 during the Yankee Dirt Track Classic at Farley Speedway.

Kay continues West Liberty Deery Series streak

April 12th, 2015

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa – Justin Kay got back in the groove Saturday at West Liberty Raceway.

A week after exiting early with mechanical issues in the Deery Brothers Summer Series opener, the defending champion led the last 26 of 40 laps in winning the second installment of the 2015 IMCA Late Model tour.

Ron Boyse took the green from outside row one and led the first lap; pole starter Nezworski let the next 13 times around the oval, before the only caution of the night came out.

Kay, who had worked his way to third from 10th, passed both Boyse and Nezworski following the ensuing restart. He got into heavy lapped traffic with 10 to go but still took the win well ahead of Fitzpatrick.

The 43 Deery entries at West Liberty matched the track record established in April of 2012. Winner of the $250 Sunoco Race Fuels feature qualifier drawing was Scott Fitzpatrick. Nezworski left town with the series point lead.
